The Story of My Identity in High School When we were in high school, different students stood out for different reasons. Such reasons defined their identities and made them be known. Some were had exemplary performance in class work, some in games, other in public communication and other were also good in other extracurricular activities. I also got the chance to stand out in my high school for various events including being an outstanding basketball player and the founder of environmental cleaning program in the school.

This essay is, therefore, aimed at giving the story of my identity in high school that I feel so important to include in my college application statement. Just after enrolling for my high school, as a good and observant student, I realized that there was something that was messy with the school environment. Most of the time, you could walk around and see multicolored pieces of nylon paper and book pieces on the fields and along the pathways. This never seemed very pleasant to me. At this time, I was already cognizant of the fact that the school had employed people whose duties were to make every part of the compound very clean.

Despite all this effort by the administration, the school compound still did not look like it was well kept by the workers. This gave me a challenge to think about what I could involve in as a student to help bring change in the school environment. It is for this reason that I came up with the idea of garbage collection bins that were to be located in special areas where people had higher tendencies of throwing the litter just anyhow and anywhere. For a start, I used savings from my pocket money to make five bins that did not cost much.

Each bin was divided into two sections where one section was meant for recyclable wastes while the other section was meant for non-recyclable wastes. The five bins were placed strategically near the playing ground, near the food canteens, and at students' social centers. After one month, the observation was that; there resulted into a great reduction in the amount of wastes that were being thrown just anywhere in the compound. Most students at least found places to dispose of their wastes. I then informed the department concerned about the issue, and they agreed to support my initiative through providing more bins.

The garbage collection program was then initiated, of which I became chairman by the virtue that I was the father of the garbage collection idea among students. I became known for this initiative that saw me win several in-school awards on environmental conservation. I was also a good player of basketball, something that gave me a lot of fame in school and saw me win several awards. I remember one time when I acted as the team captain when our captain was sick and lead the team to beat the then-defending champions that were highly feared for their toughness in the game.

After that I was made to officially become the team captain and take over from the previous captain. Since then, I led my team through several matches, out of which, they won 75% of them. I also feel that my identity in the school was also pronounced through my position in basketball as the team captain.
