Piper is described as a bisexual woman living in New York who is sentenced to 15 months imprisonment in a federal department of corrections (Kerman). The aim of her sentence is, she was caught transporting a suitcase full of drug that worth a lot of dollars to her former girlfriend, Laura prep on (stage name, Alex Vause), who is her associate and a known international drug mule. The offense piper is said to have committed occurred 10 years before the series was started. Having been sentenced for fifteen months, Chapman left her fiancé Larry, who was supportive for her new home, the women prison.

As stated by (Kerman, Piper), “From her first strip search to her final release, Kerman learns to navigate this strange world with its strictly enforced codes of behavior and arbitrary rules. She meets women from all walks of life, who surprise her with small tokens of generosity, hard words of wisdom, and simple acts of acceptance. Heartbreaking, hilarious, and at times enraging, Kermans story offers a rare look into the lives of women in prison, why it is we lock so many away and what happens to them when theyre there.

" While in prison, she meets with racial dynamics in which she learns some of the basic rules, before she discovers that her former lover, Vause is in the same prison. They also tried to get moves on each other before the harsh turn of events when, Piper denounced Alex for Larry her fiancé outside prison, Alex stepped down and Larry came to warn him of anything to do with Piper but he told him it was Piper who rekindled their friendship, Larry who was furious at that time, also denounced Piper and she tried to go back to Alex who refused her back and she had to remain alone at last.

In contrast his, the book has it that they were not put in the same prison, but some truth comes out later when the book confirmed that they at last crossed paths that was under different circumstances. The television also tries to create a margin that exist
