mmuniсаtiоn and Меdiа Mаnаgеmеnt Name Course Lecture Date How tasks were informed by theories and concepts studied The tasks I completed during my project were mainly informed by the theories as well as the concepts studied in my program. The News and Social Media connections unit was very useful in that it helped me in building up on the introductory concepts of communication to develop my writing skills in areas such as in the communication plan. By having the skills, I was able to develop communication plan to be reviewed by other journalists and they even qualified for publication after minimal modifications. This was underpinned by the development of knowledge in relation to media audiences, newsworthiness and persuasion (Barnlund 2008). Through this unit I was also able to develop skills that essential in the production of online materials and industry related documents for Little Birdy Network. This aided me in my project and will also be essential in my future workplaces since I will produce accurate documents. Another unit that I made use of its concepts and ideas was the integrated communication planning. Through the unit, I developed a clear and concise understanding of the planning, integration as well as the management of the key communication skills that I applied when working on my project. Through this, I integrated my theoretical knowledge and research with high level of writing skills and strategic planning that I had acquired during my course. This enabled me to write the communication plan articles in my project. Also through the application of the theories and concepts, my planning was informed by the goals of the organization that I was working for coupled with extensive research and analysis of the situation at hand. Through this, I always worked towards the achievement of the set goals in the organization (Robbins et al. 2011). I was also able to develop advanced skills related to strategy development, tactics, schedules, budgets and the coming up of measurement and evaluation plans. This ensured that I completed the allocated task within the required time limit and with the necessary resources. The unit also guided me a lot in ensuring that I adhered to legal, ethical and social issues and I applied this in a practical context during my project. This was essential since ethical, legal and social issues are mainly a major drawback for organizations. Organizations need to always adhere to the issues at all times. During the project, I also applied the theories and concepts taught in the university in the communication management in practice unit. I applied the knowledge leant in this unit by employing advanced communication theories and mostly particularly the theories that relates to creative industry policies, networking, theories of perfusion and communication technology. These theories played an essential role during my project since they eased my communication with other employees and we worked with and helped us in resolving any arising conflicts in an effective and timely manner (Myers & Knox 2000). My project also involved a lot of presentation and this unit was essential since it taught us of the essential presentation skills. Since I plan to work in the media or public relation departments in future the course on public relation theory and practice was essential. The two departments call for constant mingling with people from all spheres of life. Through the course, I was able to gain knowledge on public communication and this was done by examining the theories, contexts and concepts of the professional practice. I also applied the theoretical principles and practices that underpin the different forms public communication in my projects. This enabled me to have a clear understanding of the economic, social, political and technological contexts of the approaches of communication applied in organizations and most particularly in advertising and public relations. A major difference that I noticed was that not much information was offered as the tutorials and lecture form the university. During the project, I was offered with a just a few points and I was supposed to research and write up all alone. Another major difference was that there was no exact structure that was outlined to be followed while undertaking the project. This seemed to be very different from the university since the university offered us with structures that we needed to follow in completing allocated tasks. The projects also offered opportunities to me to be creative as compared to when am working on university projects (Flynn et al. 2006). Self development during the internship/project Prior to starting the project I had set out a number of goals and objectives that I wanted to achieve. One of the major goals was the increasing of my knowledge of the media. I believe that to a great extent I was able to achieve this goal since I engaged in numerous and high quality research. This aided me a lot in understanding more about what I needed to bring out in future public communication (Keyton & Frey 2002). Through this, I would offer the viewers with well researched, quality and well informed information on various aspects in the society. I was also able to engage myself with a number of journalists on the kind of communication plan that they expected from me. This was very inspirational since they guided me and showed me how the do’s and don’ts in the industry. Additional I was able to brief the journalist on phone with my written communication plan. I was always ready to take advice from them and improve my written communication plan based on the instructions and advice give. This went a long way in ensuring that my written communication plan was of great standard. The second objective that I aimed at achieving was the improving of my writing skills throughout the project. At first the communication plan that I wrote needed to be edited by others for them to published and broadcasted. As time went by I improved I was able to produce communication plans that could be published and broadcasted immediately. At first, I also had some grammar mistakes; I was able to improve this through constant writing and reviewing documents before submitting them. At the end of the project I was also able to write up interesting blogs and website that would catch the viewer’s attention and let them yearning for the next article that were coming up (Flynn et al. 2006). The last objective relates to the improvement of my communication skills. English is my second language and I hoped to speak better and proper English and communicate well with all people. I was able to achieve this objective and thus I worked well with others when we were allocated tasks as groups. This was coupled with listening skills that I had developed over time and this ensured that I was a good communicator since I first listened before giving any kind of response. I was also to attain a number of the seven graduate qualities from Unisa. I was able to transfer the competencies in my project in a professional manner. A major quality that I acquired was that I have developed a clear understanding of major areas of research based on my knowledge in media and communication management, the methodologies that I can apply in my professional work so as to create a new knowledge (Keyton & Frey 2002). At the same time I was able to create, offer critique and at the same time appraise significant and new knowledge. By doing so, I will be able to be at par with what is going on in my study field and put into consideration the new knowledge in my future workplaces. I was also able to have a committed ethical action as well as social responsibility. In regard to these, I vowed and always seek to work in a professional and ethical manner for the benefit of the whole society. Before releasing any of the communication plans I always check the authenticity of the information so as not to mislead the readers and the society at large. Through the project I was able to be prepared for lifelong learning and mostly in pursuit of my ongoing personal excellence and development in research beyond and within my professional area. I aim to achieve these by forming teamwork with other professionals in my field and discussion of any new ideas and knowledge that may crop up with time. Over time I have also become an effective and efficient problem solver (Myers & Knox 2000). Through this I was able to apply critical, logical as well as creative thinking to a range of research problems in my professional area. Through this, issues in my professional filed were solved in a more realistic manner. In instances when we were faced with a number of issues in the work environment I always solved the problem in the most effective manner to ensure that we continued to work in a collaborative manner and the allocated tasks was completed on time and in the most effective manner to enhance achievement of goals and objectives. Professional strengths and weaknesses Through the project, I noticed that I portrayed both professional strengths and weaknesses. A major strength that I depicted was being self-motivated and determined. Without being self motivated even the best employees are likely to languish and fail to achieve the success. This ensured that I was able to complete the allocated task with minimal or no supervision and I always completed it on time (Infante, Rancer & Womack 2003). Another strength that I depicted was being a hardworking person and a team player. In the modern world, most organizations encourages their employees to work as teams and by having these strength it was as good as having a certain academic degree. Hardworking is also a common trait for the successful employees and I portrayed this trait in the most effective manner (Myers & Johnson 2003). By combining all these strengths I was able to work collaboratively with all the others during my project and achieved the goals and objectives that I had set prior to the commencement of the project. Despite the various strengths that I portrayed, I also have some weaknesses that I plan to work on over the years. A major weakness is that I lacked some essential skills. No individual have all the skills and qualities. This seems to be one of the greatest disadvantages that everyone is faced with. For instance I was very anxious in meeting new people and my job involved meeting and working with a great number of people. Additionally, I was very sensitive and these mainly lead to disagreements with other team members on very small issues (Robbins et al. 2011). Over the next two years I plan to graduate from the university and advance my career path. Additionally, I will decide whether to go back and work in my home country which is Hong Kong or stay in Australia. I also plan to work in the public relations or in the media filed so as to implement what I have learnt. References Barnlund, D 2008, A transactional model of communication. In. C. D.
