‘I Am Not Yours’ by Sara Teasdale ‘I am not yours’ is a poem written by Sara Teasdale. The poem falls under the romance genre. In my point of view, the poetess intends to bring forward the idea that she is not ruled by another and that she exists on her own. The two individuals may love each other greatly but it is not possible for them to eventually be together. She wants to be fall deeply in love where her senses don’t matter anymore. The writer intends to explain this aspect through loving words to help the others believe that she has not let herself go completely. She does hope that the two souls would someday be united together forever. During this analysis, the entire scenario would be explained in a step by step manner keeping in mind the main context of the poem. ‘I am not yours’ are words that simply mean that she has not given up herself to the man she loves. She has not lost or knit herself with someone who may love her. She decides not to let go of her soul completely. She still claims to be an independent individual even though she may desire to be wholly dependent on another. At first, one would feel that the love of the writer has not been reciprocated, but as you move forward, you may realize that it has been returned and she is completely taken by this love. She feels lost in this love and it seems to have taken over her entirely. ‘Not lost, although I long to be’ are the words used to describe her feeling. However, she still remains in her own senses and has maintained control over herself so that she may not be treated as an object rather than a human being loved and cared for. She wonders why she still has control over the situation even though she would prefer to lose all control and be free of any responsibility. The writer feels like a part of the dark world where she cannot be found as she states that she is ‘lost as a candle lit in noon’. She feels unnoticed and that she would simply loose herself if no one came looking for her in the light of day. Even if someone does come looking for her she would be difficult to find like a ‘snowflake in the sea’ is impossible to find. The poetess loves the other individual in an unconditional manner. She believes that he loves her in the same manner and his presence makes her feel spirited, beautiful and bright. She finds him to have a ‘spirit beautiful and bright’. The environment lights up just by believing that she is being loved in a similar manner that she loves him. At times, she would want to be ‘lost as a light lost in the night’ not to feel any pain and not to believe that she may not be loved in the similar manner. She possesses love that may be too strong and may not requisite in the same manner. She is a dreamer where she desires that she is loved so deeply she cannot hear or see anything else in the world. She wants to be lost in the night like the light. The people around her are trying to help her realize that such love does not exist in the world and she should return back to reality. They try to convince her that she needs to set boundaries for herself and not let lose entirely by becoming blind and deaf. Her senses must always remain strong and she should not provide others the opportunity to harm her strong emotions. She desires to be blown away by the storm of his love and seeks refuge in his strong affections. She continuously asks to be swept by his affection and is entirely devoted to the idea. She wants to be ‘plunged into his deep love’ where she cannot see, feel or hear anything as she requires ‘My senses, leave me deaf and blind’. She feels that she may diminish and loose herself in this developing world and reaches out to him to save her from getting lost. At all times, the poetess is pleading to find her true love and to help him feel the same way she feels about love. There exists confusion for the reader in the end where they don’t understand if eventually the poetess received her bliss or was left in oblivion. She wants to be ‘swept by the tempest of your love’ where she wants to meet the being who would sweep her off her feet entirely and take her into a world that would not harm her in any manner possible. Also she states that ‘A taper in the rushing wind’ is where the place is narrow and the rushing wind of love blows her away. She wants her love to be eternal and any human being who has been in love would understand this aspect. This poem relates to all those who are in love, want to be in love or long to be loved by someone. In my opinion, each individual in this world longs to be loved and to feel secure that another individual is present for them at all times. The narrator has intensely expressed her desire to be loved by another in the same manner she loves. The emotional aspects of the poem attract those who have the desire to achieve similar love and affection from another. She feels that the love is present but she wants this love to be deep and meaningful. The poem transitions as to how she is now owned by anyone but would like to be lost into someone’s emotions and love. She wants to be tied to this love and is passionate for success. The poem consists of mixed emotions that can only be well explained by the poetess herself. In my opinion, the poetess longs for pure love and wants to be completely lost in it. However, she has not been able find this true love as yet and would always be searching. She can let go of her own identity if she is able to find such a human being in her lifetime. Read More
