The Meaning Of Art Art has a diversity of meanings according to various individuals and places. Many questions have different solutions to different artists. In this reflection, I endeavor to focus on the information that I obtained from the readings in Art21 while presenting my personal views about artistic works. Artists get their inspiration from different quarters. It is quite apparent that according to the reading Where do artists find inspiration? That color is one of the aspects that derives tan artist into developing some work. Jessica Stockholders mentions that not only the color gets to inspire an artist but also the view that artistic work convers inexpensive items to look gorgeous1. This means that the work of art is geared towards filling a gap in the market. For example, those that are unable to afford the expensive diamond can opt to have plastic artistic works. The aesthetic is also very important in motivating an artist; Mary Heilmann, points out to color and aesthetics as the major inspirations to her work. Artists also find it appropriate and derive a lot of inspiration from doing their work in a different way; this is according to Heilmann2. The importance of art was another aspect addressed in the readings. In the reading, why is art important? Both the video as well as the drawing provided much insight on the essence of developing an artistic work. According to Doris Salcedo, art brings history alive and makes generations to have a connection. He described his work of art as a connection between people of different ages since such could easily be forgotten. Art does not only provide the remembrance of the artist but also the events or situations depicted in the artistic work. In addition, it is apparent from Salcedo that art brings forth aspect that provides a common platform to the society. It is also clear that art plays a role in attempting to address experiences of people3. According to the “Fantasy” by Jeff Koons, art presents some power that is accompanied some form of moral authority. Some of the moral aspects of artwork include good ethics and encouraging spirituality4. In this regard, art work plays a role of informing the public on best practices and morality. Another Art21 reading under focus is, What makes something a work of art? Over time creativity has created a diversification in the work of art, in the modern context the work of art takes a broad perspective. Some artistic work is supposed to be a creative component that should not always be predictable by the people that view it. However, Vija Celmins mentions that the work should be strong and done very well. The view that a particular work of art is not clearly defined makes it to be recognized as a work of art5. Bruce Nauman in his video presents work of art as objects that are familiar as well as those that do not exist but have created through the creativity of the artist. The functionality of an object derived from art may not be in existence but by the view that the object has been developed, then there will be an accompanying work6. Basically, art work entails an exploration of idealistic products that will find some work in the society. To shed light on the significance of an artist in the society, the reading, What is the role of the artist? Provided much insight on what is expected of an artist. There is a very simplistic approach on the expectations of an artist. As depicted in Alfredo Jaars “Rwanda Rwanda” image, an artistic can be recognized from a very simplistic approach7. The most important thing is to develop an object that carry a meaning and it is has a strategic significance to the society. Anyone who is able to capture a situation or event and present it in a particular way qualifies to be an artist. In describing his photographic images, An-My Le reports that their art is based on having a difficult presentation that invokes thoughts8. This is an indicator that an artistic should be able to move out of the norm in order to present their work in an improved way. In essence, the artist should be a creative and objective individual. Based on the four readings in Art21, I relate with the arguments in the readings in diverse ways. I agree that different aspects including the art itself, the aesthetics of their work and the value addition they put to objects inspire artists. In addition, I perceive that artists also derive pleasure and feel motivated when their works are recognized. Getting to earn income through art also acts as a motivating factor to the artists. In my work, my motivation would be to develop an artistic work that would be acceptable across the board. The importance of art cannot be overemphasized. It helps link generations, forms the basis of history, and carries power and moral authority. It is quite clear from the readings that art has insurmountable importance to the society. I find these propositions relevant and would endeavor to use them when considering developing my own artistic works. The work should at least have some memory and should be able to carry some meaning to the society. Through my work, I would endeavor to create something that is of importance. The definition of a particular piece of work as a work of art is defined in the reading based on various characteristics. An artistic work is considered to have elements of creativity, and diversification. In addition, the work should be concrete and should be well done in order to translate its meaning to generations. Artwork should have a particular function so that it is able to attract the interest of people. There is also the aspect of art being explorative. I would endeavor to present a unique piece of art that brings forth a creative perspective that encourages individuals to possess the work. The artist has the role of developing an artwork that is capable of capturing attention. It is the role of an artist to present work that is objective and with a meaning. In developing their work, the artist should be able to express himself or herself in a simplistic way that invokes thoughts. It is important that as an artist that I should move out of the norm and develop content that embraces creativity and remains objective. ….I would suggest you draw a tree with an eye that is being cut. The section of the tree being cut should be shown bleeding (do not show blood but instead a green pigment flowing out of the tree). This is an environmental message that depicts the pain that trees confront while watching us cut them. Bibliography Art21, Inc. Segment: Bruce Nauman in “identity”. 2001.
