Summary
This paper "Open Systems Interconnection Model and the Department of Defense Model" tells that the four-layer model of the DoD was developed in the 1970s (“The OSI Model”). The core protocols of the Internet follow the DoD model. It is just the OSI model’s condensed version. …

The Internet layer of the DoD model transfers the data from the source host to the host in the destination across various physical networks which link the machines together. The fourth layer helps deliver the data across specific hardware media. The OSI model was created by the ISO in the 1980s. The OSI model explains the working of the network components and protocols. The network protocol functions are divided by the OSI reference model into seven layers, each of which stands for a group of related functions, activities, and traits.

The layers of the OSI model include the application layer, presentation layer, session layer, transport layer, network layer, data link layer, and physical layer. The OSI model is generic and helps explain any network protocol virtually. For this purpose, different protocol suites are generally mapped. For instance, the TCP/IP was designed specifically for mapping the DoD model. ISO revised the DoD model since the DoD model had deficiencies in it and was not quite detailed, which is one reason why the OSI model has more layers than the DoD model.
