While social networking today provides many opportunities it is advisable to understand the risks posed in order to take the necessary steps to use social media responsibly (McNamara 2011, p.14). Every department needs to have a safeguard list to understand the safety aspects of social media.

Before posting anything online consider what is termed acceptable and unacceptable behavior on media terms. Every social site has a term of service that gives clear terms and conditions, including safety tools and privacy (McNamara 2011, p.14). When engaging in publicity you need to have an understanding of your target audience. To optimize your brand’s publicity collect enough information about the online audience’s behavior. To sell online t is advisable to choose the advertisement carefully that way your target audience is clear (Kent 2008, p.21). Social sites give guidelines online on internet advertising to avoid instances such as cyberbullying, underage sexual exposure, illegal schemes, and dangerous masquerades.

It is wise for the organization to assign a moderator who can interact with the users and manage content online. Choosing to use sites that adhere to social networking legislations could also lead to good practice. Sites such as Bebo, MySpace, and Facebook stress are keen on safety use and guidelines and adhere strictly to the land’s laws. Carrying a risk assessment on data protection as advised by Kent (2008, p.24) will act as a good guide while choosing which sites to use. If the site has several administrators always ensure that the managers are clear about what is required of them when interacting with users and responding to posts.

The administrators should refrain from inappropriate content, personating, racist or hate material, exploitation, and glorifying of dangerous activities. Vet and train the respective managers on responsible use of social media. Adopt a level of privacy when joining social sites to safeguard the company’s reputation (Kent 2008, p.26). Set passwords to keep unauthorized users from using your social page in a way that may defer the organization’s character. If not sure of a friend’s request review the user profile before accepting them as friends.

Make sure photo galleries, blogs, and links are secure before sharing them with your audience. Go through the content and images to promote safe and responsible use of social media (McNamara 2011, p.14). Remember there are fake imposters that masquerade their profiles; do not share information from such profiles. Social sites promote advertising by allowing the user to create and design a personalized site. Create an image that reflects and promotes the company images. The photos and videos, uploaded, shared links, blogs, and friends speak volumes so always reach global audiences keeping a positive image and unique style.
