Plagiarism may either be a deliberate action or unintentional. According to Plagiarism.org, actions that qualify as plagiarism include submitting other people's views pretending they are your own views, duplicating other people's ideas or research without acknowledging their contributions, improper citations which include citing false references, and duplicating the organization of words in a sentence without acknowledging the origin. It is worth noting that plagiarism can be averted by acknowledging the fact that the ideas, views, or sentence organization originated from a particular source (Plagiarism.org).

There are a number of ways through which plagiarism can be averted. The secret to writing a plagiarism-free essay or research paper is writing everything in your own's words. Subsequently, other people's views ought to be properly referenced or cited. In case one is not conversant with the various citation styles, it would be of significance to seek the help of the teacher or lecturer (Plagiarism.org). In definition, a citation is referred to as a method or technique used to notify those reading your work of the fact that a particular view to support your ideas originated from a particular reference or book (Plagiarism.org).

At times, it would be important to quote another person's ideas if rewording would distort the meaning or elucidation of a text made by a specific researcher or writer. Short quotations should be between quotation marks while long quotations should be indented and the page number and author or authors of the source properly indicated. There are a number of citation styles used in writing essays or research papers.

The most commonly used styles include MLA (Modern Language Association), APA (American Psychological Association), Chicago, Harvard, and Oxford. Others include NLM (National Library of Medicine), ACS (American Chemical Society), IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), AAA (American Anthropological Association), and APSA (American Political Science Association) (Plagiarism.org). Each of these styles has specific requirements that must be adhered to. At the end of an essay or research paper, all the references used must be listed.
