Creating an essay for your studies is unavoidable, no matter whether you`re attending a Business or a Creative Writing seminar. And to prepare a decent text, you`ll have to use your imagination as well as the thoughts of other researchers. So, when you do the last thing, you`re citing.

One of the most widespread sources of citation is a book. In case your task is to create content for Business, Criminology, Education, Journalism, International Studies, Psychology or Linguistics, the chances are you`re most probably have to use American Psychological Association (APA) style to format your papers in.

So, how to cite a book APA? Well, the thing is that this question consists of several ones:

1)    How to cite a book APA if it`s printed?

Inside the text your citation will placed right after the quotation marks (or your reference to the initial source in your paper of if any) like here: “In the little world in which children have their existence, whosoever brings them up, there is nothing so finely perceived and so finely felt, as injustice.“ (Dickens, 1860)

So, you are to include the last name of the author, supported by the comma and put the year of the book`s publication in brackets.

If the direct quote is long (more than 40 words), use this example:

This suggests that familiarity with a non-native speech in general, although it is clearly not as important a variable as topic familiarity, may indeed have some effect. That is, prior experience with non-native speech, such as that gained by listening to the reading, facilitates comprehension. (Gass & Varonis, 1984, p. 77)

2)    How to cite an article APA?

Your best choice is to stick to this template when citing something from an online journal article: Author, A. (Publication Year). Article title. Periodical Title, Volume(Issue), pp.-pp. DOI:XX.XXXXX or Retrieved from journal URL

If the journal article is in print version, do not mention DOI or URL.

3)    How to include a citation APA from an online book?

To be 100% sure you`re putting a citation from an online book correctly, use this structure: Last, F. M. (Year Published) Book. Retrieved from URL or simply include DOI

An in-text citation should be included in the following manner: (Last name of the author, year of publication, page number).

Of course, sources like e-books and websites, where there are no page numbers, it is obligatory to use a paragraph number instead of the page number.

4)    How to cite using APA style from a book retrieved from a database?

A citation obtained from a book, which is located in the database, will correspond with the way you include a quotation from the online book.

Note that if there are two authors of a particular work you`re referring to, include the last names of every author using the ‘&’ sign instead of ‘and.’
