Birth Trauma: In the Eye of the Beholder C.T. Beck Birth trauma is a condition which in this study was found to be merely an illusion due to the behavior of the persons involved in the situation. Beck has identified this through a research conducted relating to the rationale phenomenon of the trauma which can range from a rapid delivery to cardiac arrest. Statement of the Problem The phenomenon of interest is on the research for the basis of birth trauma in mothers which has been acknowledged; although a bit indistinctly. It has been stated, that no presumptions were taken in regard when carrying out the research. Indeed, it is a necessity that the research is carried out in the qualitative format; as the phenomena is studied little in regard to the human behavior. The phenomenon of interest helps to shape the details or the way the study advances; which isn't directly mentioned in the study. The philosophical underpinnings of the research described in the article are irrational striving to prove that birth trauma is an illusion on behalf of the sufferer. Purpose The standpoint here is that on an average, of all the studies mentioned in the article; only Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) was observed which 25 % of the eligible mothers were suffering from. The concept of birth trauma is vastly seen as routine and flexibility of opinions is none whatsoever. Hence, it is of concern to find out the hidden meaning and experiences not of PTSD but of birth trauma. Whilst, the research on birth trauma does not consider nursing to have any effect on it though it does contribute to it one way or another. Method The method used was through a research centre which was compatible; conceivably not to a great extent, when considering the amount of women who participated in the study. The only requirement was to narrate the experience of going through birth trauma. This was not enough because the reasons for the occurring of trauma were not identified. The years from the occurrence of birth trauma were in some cases more than a decade ago. Therefore, tangible parts may have been forgotten or altered in the memory especially if any feelings of resentments weren't addressed in all that time. Sampling Selection of participants was straightforward with a few basic requirements. The use of purposive sampling showed that the criterion for participating was simply based on mothers who have gone through birth trauma. Purposive sampling is used to prove a particular point, which was suitable for the research being carried out as it can be easily approached to a group of people, though it is subject to error. Thus, help in increasing the outlook on the experiences. While the chosen informants were suitable for the research, in a sense, that they were ready to reveal their personal experiences. Human Subject Protection There was no mention of protection of humans; just a personal experience of the implications of birth trauma on their lives. Though the words quoted in the article were anonymous for protection of the mothers. Moreover, there was no such need for security of the participants as the phenomenon was only used to draft the results. Data Collection The collection of data was largely and solely focused on the human experience of the trauma through emails containing stories. Almost all the data was collected through the internet which took a maximum of one and a half year. Whereas, spent six months were spent in extracting the significant information from the accounts: data saturation or redundancy. Data Analysis The strategies used were made illustrative by arranging them into themes of four groups relevant to the experiences and authenticated with the candidates. Authentication guaranteed the absence of any factual error made intentionally or unintentionally in the data analyzed. The analysis of the data was straightforward and unambiguous as general or common feelings were taken into account; enhancing the significance of the experience. Credibility of the information or data received, from the participants was not attended to however; quotations used in the article were reason enough to believe the accuracy of the incident experienced. Perceptibility was not observed in the printed phenomenon or not mentioned anyhow. Whereas, the feelings of abandonment, individuality and/or indignity, were evident to comprehend the condition the mothers were in. It was audible from the accounts that main aspect of the situation, is to have support and information for the ones experiencing it. Then it becomes all too easy to see that slight modifications of every situation described in the article, would have prevented the drastic outcomes from happening. The data hence, meet the criteria required for the study to be successful in drawing conclusions; that is to an extent that the deductions can be easily useful in other studies. Such as, the most significant and insignificant causes of PTSD and other disorders related to deliveries. The outcome can only be justified if the end result hasn't inflicted any sort of adverse reactions. This not only means that families, who haven't had any babies and plan to, can be prepared beforehand what may or may not occur. The analysis thus, is successful in drawing out the themes which can be avoided if tended to before the delivery. The results of the study are presented in a simple way which can easily be understood and related to because the experiences are not only sympathetic but also eye-opening. The theory drawn in the article is, though mentioned previously; it hasn't been given the attention it needs. However, even if it was mentioned in passing in previous studies, the phenomenon is something different than just a bunch of symptoms, for the probability of PTSD occurrence. Yet birth trauma is not something which the eye perceives and the mind agrees to but a condition to be prevented to avoid further difficulties. Conclusions, Implications and Recommendations The recommendations given in the article vaguely points that treating the patients as someone who has experienced the trauma will prevent it from happening. This is not only untrue but also delusional. It means that the phenomenon at times cannot be avoided at any rate, if something unexpected occurs during the process of delivery. The conclusions can be beneficial to the research for disorders and can also be used personally. Therefore, it is hard to see how birth trauma is in the eye of the beholder; rather it is caused due to the carelessness of the clinical staff and the patient has nothing to do with it. Without complicating matters any further, the clinicians should simply communicate and act before informing the patient of the situation; as the whole situation is new for her. The incidents involving birth trauma up till now, clearly shows lack of professionalism and disregard of the emotional impacts on the mother during the process. The minor mention of the lack of studies shows that the advice, for further research on the subject is given. The significance of birth trauma on nursing is that it might have some effects on the decision to nurse which is not mentioned in the study. Nursing can either cease due to the horrible experience or used to prove the capability to feed in women going through birth trauma. References - Ballard, C. G., Stanley, A. K., & Brockington, I. F.
