Second, the study aimed to determine the levels of motivation of football players in losing teams as influenced by their coaches. Behaviors that indicate intrinsic motivation are observed only sometimes. There were significant, positive correlations between the coach’s practice of transformational and transactional leadership on one hand, and the motivational level of workers on the other. The present study shows that leadership and coaching methods do have a significant impact on motivational levels of players.

When motivated, players are more likely to perform their best and are more likely to become satisfied and committed while playing the game.Every coach who has been involved in sports desire for their players to develop a positive and motivated attitude with which these athletes become determined to work hard and place much effort out of their own drive and intentions, and not due to external rewards such as recognition and social approval (Vlachopoulos, Karageorghis, and Terry 2000). The motivation of athletes, its causes and consequences, have long been receiving a great deal of attention from researchers and sports teams.

Coaching behavior has been associated with the development of motivation among players, hence, the need to look into the necessary attitudes and behaviors of coaches that will either improve or reduce motivation levels of players (Jowett 2000). In football, just as in other sports, the work of coaches is stressful and demanding by nature as they have the responsibility to optimize their team’s performance (Crust and Lawrence 2006).From 2004 to 2005, half of the 92 coaches who were involved in the English professional league season were discharged from their jobs during the season’s end, thereby demonstrating the uncertainties that go with their careers.

The length of time that coaches spend on their position is at an average of 2 years (The Guardian 2002).
