Visual Arts and Film Studies Comparative Art Analysis The purpose of the essay is to present a comparative analysis of one’s art work with that of a Fantastic artist’s work. The artist chosen is Marc Chagall, considered a Surrealist artist and the work that would be used for the analysis is “Self-portrait with seven fingers” (Fantasy Arts). The art work in an oil on canvass completed within 1912 to 1913, containing the following dimensions: 128cm x 107cm and located at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (Fantasy Arts).

Marc Chagall’s biography indicated that he was born in Russia in 1887 of a poor Jewish family (Marc Chagall Paintings). His work was influenced by works on cubism and was reported to manifest characteristics and features such as “soothing poetic, personal stories based on Belarusian folklore and the artists Jewish heritage” (The Penn State College of Arts and Architecture 1). As indicated in his website, most of his art works were inspired by themes from the Bible and likewise incorporated works and elements from the religious life in Russia and from folklore (Marc Chagall Paintings).

In analyzing the “Self-portrait with seven fingers”, one is amazed at the vividness and colorful rendition of his self-portrait and the influence of both cubism and fantastic art are clearly exemplified. As the artist, he was shown in painting a scene apparently from a farm or native village. His image was shown dressed formally for a special event, with his curls distinctly eminent and he was apparently portrayed with his left leg apparently raised or resting on the easel. At the background, viewers see the image of the Eiffel Tower at the backdrop and the walls of his abode were in deep and matte shades of red.

Other colors of pink, blue, green, yellow, brown, and black were also used. The seven fingers on his left hand signify the artist’s preference for fantastic art by symbolizing that apparently more vibrant images could be created. When compared to one’s work, the THEMES are basically the same, that of portraying self-images. One’s art work focused on the female’s face rendered in more sublime and matte COLORS of “Self-portrait with seven fingers” pink, cream blues, grays and oranges; with other images in the form Source: Fantasy Art of men’s faces at the background.

Marc Chagall’s work is related to one’s art work in terms of expressing fantastic art through personal interpretation of one self. There is disparity in terms of SPACING where one’s work placed various images near the focal point but at a DISTANCE. On the contrary, Chagall’s work clearly DELINEATED IMAGES, and the LIGHT AND DARK colors contributed to depicting nearness and distance. One’s own art work likewise was effective in using SHADOWS to emphasize background images in contrast to the CENTRAL FIGURE or FOCAL POINT.

The MEDIUM used are Own Art Work different with Chagall using oil on canvass and mine using ___________________________. Overall, these works of art portray expressions of self-portraits using diverse medium, forms, colors that ultimately relay different messages to the viewers. The artists intended meaning of their works of art could be interpreted differently depending on the viewers’ perceptions and points of views, as well as the capabilities to discern the artists’ portrayal of their respective works of art.
